Jade Armour

2' x 3'.

Photographs, hand dyed and printed silk, unspun silk.

Jade Armour is comprised of contemporary photographs of nondescript, quotidian scenes. The images have been obscured by an overlay of painted silk - to make them look like stone. The real small stories have been obliterated by the large official, manufactured jade story, which may or may not be true. My Jade Armour was inspired by the jade mortuary suit of Princess Douwan, made during the Han Dynasty (206B.C. to 25 A.D.). To the Chinese, jade symbolizes the highest virtues and qualities and reflects not only beauty, creativity and refinement, but the evolution of an entire civilization.
