Conspicuous Consumption

Cotton dyed with indigo, iron and tea. Foraged oyster and winkle shells.

This piece tells of the waste created by the button making industry in Birmingham, England. Shiploads of pearl oyster shells were imported to the UK. The button forms were punched out of the shells leaving piles of detritus.
