Hand painted and printed cotton and silk organza, feathers, photo transfers. Hand stitched and quilted.
The Mourning Quilt for the Lost and Disappearing Birds of Canada uses feathers as the batting. These same feathers were used to print on the silk organza after it had been painted so that every real feather has a ‘ghost’ feather print. Each organza square was then folded into an origami bird and the folds dipped in pigment. I call this process “origami shibori”. When the square is unfolded, there remains an echo of the now-vanished bird.
